New Committee members required
Corsham Bridge Club AGM will be held in October and we are seeking more members to join the committee then. Although the club membership has grown significantly in recent years, the members of the committee are all ‘old hands’ and it would be great for the committee to have some fresh members bringing new ideas.
This year, Colin, if he is re-elected as our chairman, will be entering the final year of the maximum 3-year term. It is highly desirable that any new chairman to be elected in October 2020 will already have had experience of serving on the committee. New committee members this year would give the club greater choice of Chairman next year.
Anyone who might consider serving on the committee is invited to attend our next meeting, on 2 September, as a ‘taster experience’.
More Scorers required
The club also needs one or two more people to learn how to operate our BridgeTab scoring system. A basic ability to use a laptop computer and Android phone/tablet is all that is required. Ray or Janet can then teach you the extra knowledge needed to run the system on a normal club evening.
Please see Colin, Janet, Sue, Hilary, Chris or Ray if you would consider volunteering for either the committee or for scoring.

A4 Night-time Road Closure in August/September
For some, currently unspecified, nights in August and/or September, the Cross Keys junction on the A4 between Chippenham and Corsham will be closed to all traffic after 8pm.
If these closures fall on a Wednesday, this will obviously affect players who intend to return to Chippenham after playing at Corsham Bridge Club during the relevant periods. And/or, it may also affect travel home from the Club BBQ for those members who live in Corsham.
More details, hopefully including in due course the actual dates, can be found on the Wilts Council website at http://www.wiltshire.gov.uk/highways-improvements-a4-cross-keys-corsham

Play Fun Bridge for Charity at Malmesbury Bridge Club
Thursday 29th August 2019
6.45 for 7pm,
Athelstan House, Priory Way, Burton Hill, Malmesbury. SN16 0FB.
Malmesbury Bridge Club celebrates Malmesbury Carnival with a singles competition, in which players change their partner and move every couple of hands.
It’s a fun way of meeting more people and finding out how different people play.
It’s also a good introduction to Malmesbury Bridge Club for people who have never been before or who don’t like to come without a partner.
Malmesbury Bridge Club would like to invite Corsham Bridge Club members - and anyone you know who may be interested - to join them next Thursday for an informal evening of bridge.
Any profit made will go to a charity of the winner’s choosing.
The cost is £5 session. As it is a charity evening, voluntary donations are welcome but not required.
Come and have your cake and eat it!

Nine teams competed and the 2 teams entered by Bath Bridge club took 1st and 2nd places

Master Points and NGS
These are both ways in which the EBU enables their members to measure their progress and success in competitive play. Many of our members are familiar with both these terms, but some newer members may not be, so for a brief, and simplified, explanation please click here. Full details of both schemes can be found on the EBU website.
EBU members are given a ranking, (such as Local Master, County Master, Premier Master etc), depending on how many points they have accumulated, and promotions between these ranks are announced monthly on the EBU website.
In July 2017, two of Corsham Bridge Club’s newer members, Ken Bowater and Helen Madle, both of whom learned from scratch with our Club, were promoted to Local Master. Congratulations to them both.
At Corsham Bridge Club, the majority of our members are either graded Two, or have not yet acquired a grade. However our highest graded member (on 29 August 17) was a Jack with a few members graded Nine. The 'average' grade nationally is an Eight.

Teams Match - Corsham vs Malmesbury Tue 5 June 2018 at Malmesbury
Congratulations to both the Malmesbury teams, who comprehensively beat the Corsham teams at this event.
This event was a match between a Team of Eight from each club, which was scored as a normal teams event.
Despite our defeat, this was a very enjoyable evening with excellent food shared during the interval.
Many thanks to all who took part and to all for providing the food.
Full results can be seen on the Malmesbury Bridge Club website, with a summary on our Results pages.
It used to be an annual tradition to have a Corsham v Malmesbury match in our calendar, but this went into abeyance due to a decline in Corsham's member numbers. Now that our member numbers have increased, we hope that this match will be a revival of that tradition.

Summer BBQ - 11 July 18
The BBQ at Sue's home was a great success, enjoyed by all.
The weather was wonderful, the food superb and the company stimulating.
Its success was achieved through all the hard work of Janet, Colin, Sue and Keith in the preparation and execution.
Many thanks to them. Thanks too, to everyone who brought salads, deserts etc.
A great time was had by all,
marred only by the unfortunate result of the World Cup semi-final, which many of us watched in Sue's lounge.

Teams Event - May 2017
On Wed 3 May, we held our first Teams event in a very long time.
Many thanks to Colin for initiating this event and for successfully directing the 20 players, the majority of whom were "teams-virgins", to overcome the chaotic start and to settle everyone down to most enjoyable and relaxed evening.
Even the BridgeTabs scoring system behaved itself, (apart from a small problem with the database of member's names not transferring automatically between the PairsScorer and TeamsScorer programs),so that the manual and paper scores tallied, (after correcting one manual arithmetic error !).
Most of the players seemed to enjoy the experience of playing "teams" so our aim will be to repeat this periodically, when a suitable number of players attend. We will also look to arrange a friendly "teams" match with another local club.
For more information on playing Teams events and the scoring method used, please click here.

New Club Members from our Beginners Lessons
On Wed 1 June 16, we were pleased to welcome to the Club the first students from this season's course of beginners' lessons. They were all made very welcome by the existing club members and all coped very well with playing under normal club conditions. Some of the 'newbies' obtained commendable scores. We look forward to welcoming the other students over the forthcoming weeks.

The strategy for introducing the learners to become full playing members of the Club was:
- The course of lessons ended in April 2016.
- The students were then provided with about 6 weeks of ‘Assisted Play’ under simulated club conditions to build their confidence and improve their speed of play. Some regular club members joined in these sessions.
- The final 'Assisted Play' session was held on 31 May
- From 1st June the new players are welcome to come along to the Club as regular Wednesday evening players.
- We hope that they will all apply for formal membership of the Club and the Royal British Legion within a few weeks.
Friday 26 Feb 2016 - Big Get Together at Corsham Community Campus
Corsham Bridge Club, along with over 30 other organisations exhibited at this afternoon event which was targeted at local people aged over 55. Several people expressed interest, either in learning bridge through our Beginners lessons from Sept 2016, or joining in some Assisted Play sessions with this year's students to brush up their existing knowledge. They took away 'fliers' with details of how to contact us. A couple of people left us their contact details so that we could keep them informed about our 2016/17 series of lessons.

Peggy Rowell’s memories.
In May 2015, just a few months before her death, Peggy was asked if she could help with an article to go in a local magazine, with particular reference to one of our annual competitions, the Eileen Harding Handicap Cup. Here are her memories:
“I came to Chippenham and joined Corsham Bridge Club in 1973 and it had been running before then. Florence Woods founded the club. I met her in 1973 in Chippenham golf club where she was handing out leaflets looking for people to join. They did not play duplicate until about 1974. I do not know if Eileen Harding was a member then. Blanche Brinsdon was and when Robin Sutton said we had been accepted by the EBU she asked me to be her partner.”
